Off the Deep End

A rental home on Ocracoke Island

About Ocracoke

Ocracoke Island is approximately seventeen miles long. The village of Ocracoke is located at the southern tip of the island and encompasses roughly two square miles. All of the houses, shops, and restaurants located on the island are within the village area.

It is convenient to walk or bicycle almost anywhere on the island.

The National Park Service controls all the ocean front; leaving it wild, pristine, and available for use by all. On more than one occassion, Dr. Beach has named Ocracoke one of the top five beaches in the world! The sand is beautiful yellow and the water is clear. Even in the middle of summer it is possible to find a spot of beach all to yourself! There are even areas of the beach that are open to 4WD traffic, which makes getting to the beach with all your gear a breeze.

Fishing, as you can imagine, is a popular past time here. There are chartered fishing boats for hire that will take you for a quick trip to the gulf stream or smaller boats that offer in shore fishing.

Beach combing is a fantastic way to spend the day. Scotch Bonnets, Olives, Augers, and Sand Dollars are plentiful, especially along the south point of the island.

Ocracoke is rich in history; there are the ponies (now penned north of the village) that are believed to have come from Spnaish shipwrecks several hundred years ago, the Ocracoke Lighthouse (the oldest lighthouse in NC still in operation), and of course, this is where Edward Teach, you'll know him as Blackbeard, lost his head!

If you're looking for an adventure, you can kayak, parasail, take surfing lessons, or go clamming. Or, better yet, spend a lazy day reading in a chair on the beach or on your front porch.

Ocracoke is a place where your neighbors are your friends and where tranquility beckons....
